Some Years Later,
In the Middle of the Night

She can’t see. She can’t hear.

Murky darkness blurs her vision. Angry, rushing water fills her ears.

 

She can’t move. She can’t speak.

Rapid whirlpools throw her against rocks,

cutting into her skin and releasing her blood into the waves.

The water fills her throat, cutting off any chance of grasping for a last breath,

before her head is thrashed against something hard.

 

She is only sixteen.

She has a whole life left to live.

She can’t think straight, but she knows one thing is certain.
