Auto-buy author, n.
An author whose work you will always buy as soon as it’s released, no matter what the work is, because you love their previous work so much.
Do you have any auto-buy authors? Over the past few years I’ve read so many books, but certain ones have stuck out to me as clear favourites, and it often turns out to be books written by the same authors.
So, today, I’m going to share some of my favourite authors whose books I will always buy, no matter what they are. I’ll also list the books of theirs that I own, and if I’ve reviewed it, I’ll link to my review in case you’re interested in checking them out.
Neal Shusterman
It’s no secret that Neal Shusterman is my favourite author, because I don’t shut up about his books. I read Unwind at least five years ago now, and I’ve been hooked on his books ever since. My favourite book ever is Challenger Deep, which I recommend to absolutely anyone whenever I have a chance. The third book in his Scythe series, The Toll, comes out in November this year, and I’m beyond excited!

Sarah Crossan
The first book I read by Sarah Crossan was One, a story about conjoined twins, and I loved it so much. Since then, I’ve bought every one of her books as soon as I can, and loved every one of them. Sarah Crossan writes in a unique style that I’ve only seen a very small handful of other authors use, which is almost like free-verse poetry. It’s a style I hadn’t come across before, and now I love it.

Sara Barnard
This is a funny one to add to the list because I haven’t actually read some of Sara’s books, but I will always buy her new ones! I loved A Quiet Kind of Thunder (so much that I bought a copy for a friend as a birthday present, not long after I’d read it) and I always look forward to seeing what she writes next.

Patrick Ness
Similar to Sara Barnard, I haven’t read a lot of Patrick Ness’ books, but I completely adored the ones I have read, and that’s why he’s on the list. I own a decent number of his books though, and I really need to start working my way through them all!

Eowyn Ivey
A few years ago, I read The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey and fell in love with it. It’s so magical and painfully realistic at the same time, and I adored it – it’s still one of my favourite books today. I own her second book, To The Bright Edge of the World, and for some reason, I haven’t read it yet. I need to get a move on!

Akemi Dawn Bowman
Since last year (or the year before – I lose track of time), Akemi has jumped to the top of my list of favourite authors, and is now one of my top auto-buy authors. My friend Sophie gave me Akemi’s first book, Starfish, as a birthday present I’m so glad she did! I interviewed Akemi for the first ever episode of my podcast, and I’m actually now part of the Street Team for her new book, Harley in the Sky, which I can’t wait for. Juno Dawson
I met Juno Dawson at YALC in 2016, and I instantly fell in love. Since then, I’ve collected most of her books, and her two most recent YA releases, Clean and Meat Market, are two of the best books I’ve read in the past couple of years. Every time Juno tells us about a new book coming out, I just know that I’m going to buy it as soon as I see it!

Lisa Heathfield
Ever since I read her first book, Lisa Heathfield sits right alongside Neal Shusterman at the very top of my favourite authors list. Every single one of her books is incredible. It’s not often that I’ve read every book by an author, but I’ve read all of her books (except the latest one, I Am Not a Number, which has just been published and I plan to read ASAP. I might have even read it before this post goes out, because I’m aiming to read it before YALC at the end of July, which Lisa will be attending.)

Lauren James
I discovered Lauren James’ books at YALC a couple of years ago and as soon as I read one, I was instantly in love. She’s the queen of plot twists, and every single book that she writes has incredible, intricate plots that I just love.
