A (Very Belated) Writing Update
If you look at my blog, you’ll see that I haven’t written a blog post in a month… oops. I never expect or plan to have these hiatuses, but they always just happen. But when we’re on the lead up to Christmas, times get crazy and my blog kind of falls to the wayside. But I’m here now! I’m back!!!
My last couple of posts were National Novel Writing Month updates and I said I’d update you on whether I completed it or not… and I didn’t. The last time I updated you, there were still about 10 days of the month left and I was concerned that I wasn’t going to finish. (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, head to my blog and read the last couple of posts. Basically, I had to write 50k words in a month to win the challenge.)
And, now it’s finally time for a very belated writing update…
I did it!!!!
I won NaNoWriMo 2018! 🎉
Here’s a quick look at my final graph. The HUGE jump in the last couple of days makes me laugh. (If you’re on a phone, click on the image to see it larger.)
I wrote about 10,000 words I think in the last couple of days. I even had a couple of days off work to finish it. It was HARD WORK but it was so worth it when I could enter that final word count! Now I have an almost-complete novel draft that’s longer than anything I’ve written and I’m pretty proud of myself.
I haven’t touched it at all throughout December, mostly because I’ve been so busy but also because it’s usually recommended to let a draft sit for a while once you’ve finished it. Writing so many words in a short time period means you’re so involved in this writing that you often can’t tell how good it is any more, so it’s good to leave it for a while and come back to it. That’s what I’m going to do in January.
Hopefully, in January, I’m going to be entering a competition that’s judged by a great YA contemporary author, and I’m excited to enter! I’ll keep you updated with that if anything happens with it. 🙂
I’ve also got another novel idea recently that I’m quite excited by, but I probably won’t work on it for a while. I need to have a little break from trying to do too much at once, and I want to focus on one project at once. I’ll work on my NaNo draft until either something happens with it or I start to feel like it’s drying up a bit and going stale (which I hope won’t be the case). Then maybe I can have a go at something new!
Right now, it’s only a few days until Christmas (which is INSANE – where has the year gone???) so as soon as I finish work tomorrow, I’m going to spend the rest of this year relaxing, having fun and maybe writing a few blog posts if I’m up to it. I’ll come back to blogging, podcasting and writing properly in January and I can’t WAIT. I’m also starting to love Instagram at the moment so go follow me there!
I hope you have a wonderful rest of 2018 and keep working on those goals. I’ll probably write a few more blog posts while I’m off for Christmas, but I think I’m going to keep them all stockpiled ready to get 2019 off to a good start. I will be posting a 2018 reflection/wrap-up/goals-type post though, so look out for that!
