I’ve been working in a digital marketing-related job now for a few years, and I’ve learned a heck of a lot along the way.

Most of my learning has been on the job, but I’ve also done a lot of work to learn new skills in my own time. Basic marketing skills, especially for bloggers or people who want to grow their online brand, are essential. And here’s some good news: they’re really easy to learn for free or cheap!

I’m going to share a few places where you can learn basic digital marketing skills. Whether you want these skills to increase your following, grow your brand, market a product or a store, or anything else – there’s probably something here that will work for you.

Note: Links in this article may be affiliate links, meaning if you buy something through my link, I get a small amount back at no extra cost to you. Thanks!

1. Udemy

Udemy is an online course directory that has thousands of courses, ranging from free to premium. There are courses in pretty much every topic you can think of, and this includes marketing. You don’t need a membership or anything – you buy the courses as one-off products. I’d recommend hanging on until they have a sale on (they happen very regularly), and you’ll be able to bag premium courses for as low as £10.

You should take into consideration that anyone can add their course to Udemy, so before buying a course, make sure you look at the reviews and what’s included with your purchase.

2. Google Garage

This is one I discovered recently, and I’m so glad I did! They offer an in-depth digital marketing certification in partnership with the Open University, for FREE. Yep, free. The course covers all sorts of skills from email marketing, social media, SEO, and more. It’s basically everything you need to know as a blogger or a small business owner, packaged into a free course. Google Garage also has various other marketing-related courses, so it’s worth checking them out.

3. Skillshare

If you watch YouTube videos, you should have definitely heard of Skillshare by now – because they seem to sponsor every YouTuber under the sun. (This isn’t sponsored, by the way.) Skillshare, similar to Udemy, is an online course platform with over 26,000 classes in all sorts of topics. The difference is that there’s a monthly or annual membership fee to access all the courses, rather than buying them separately.

You can get a basic free membership with access to a few free courses, but a premium membership – which will cost around £10/month – gives you full access to everything. Depending on how many classes you take on the platform, that could be a really good deal. You can get a free trial too so you can try before you buy.

4. LinkedIn Learning

Previously called Lynda, LinkedIn Learning is another platform which courses approved by LinkedIn. There are courses in marketing, writing, business, productivity and more. Just like Skillshare, LinkedIn Learning comes with a membership fee to be able to access all of the content, and there’s a free trial so you can try it out first. A lot of the classes are shorter in length so they’re great if you don’t have time to sit through a course that lasts several hours, and you just want to learn the basics.

The downside to LinkedIn Learning is that it is a lot more expensive than the other options. Monthly membership will set you back around £24/month (including VAT), or £14.99/month if you pay annually.

5. YouTube

That’s right! If you want to learn for free, YouTube might be a good place to start – and it’s one people don’t consider. YouTube is just for gamers and vloggers, right?! In fact, there are tons of educational videos on YouTube if you search for them. If you just enter what you want to learn in the search bar, you’ll definitely find videos that will teach you the basic skills you need to know. Bear in mind that the content might not be as high in quality as paid course platforms, but you can still find some good stuff.

I hope this helps! Let me know in the comments if you’ve used any of these platforms to learn new skills, digital marketing or otherwise, or suggest ones you like that I didn’t include. Happy learning!
