What Inspired Me to Write a Space Book?
Guest Post by S. M. Wilson
I’ve always wanted to write a space book. As a mega fan of most sci-fi tv series and films, it was inevitable I’d eventually want to write something in a space setting. But a realistic space setting? Well, maybe not. Did you ever notice that no one goes to the bathroom in Star Trek?
One of the most inspiring places I’ve visited was NASA and my family had the joy and pleasure of meeting Don Thomas, a veteran of four space flights. It was just after the book and film The Martian had come out and we chatted about just how scientifically correct it was. The answer? Very!! We saw around a space shuttle, where astronauts sleep, how they eat, wash, and everything else. But the bathroom question was a whole other story that was way too realistic for my space book!
My problem with writing space in the here and now is I would have to include things like that. It’s much easier to jump forward into Star Trek times where people can walk about in space stations and star ships as if that’s entirely normal.
But some things about space you can’t change no matter what the timescale. Like sound. Or wind. I started with a motto for the space team that might have involved one or the other and my editor kindly pointed out the lack of both in space. Darn it.
In the meantime, I’m not quite sure I’m finished with space. The Infinity Files is a duology, but there’s just so much more potential out there I can practically feel another story growing in my head!

The Infinity Files by S. M. Wilson – Review
In case you couldn’t already tell, I’m a big space nerd. I love anything to do with astronomy and space exploration, so naturally, sci-fi books set in space are my jam!
The Infinity Files is more than just a adventure in space. Ash Yang has grand ambitions to become a fighter pilot, but when she crashes out of her final test, things don’t exactly go to plan. But then she’s given a new job–she becomes The Guardian, which happens to be one of the most important jobs in the entire universe. She must collect and return artefacts from far and wide, and keep them safe in a giant Library at the end of the universe.
The story sees Ash undertake several missions to different planets, each one unique, and each mission more dangerous than the last. I loved exploring these vibrant worlds, watching Ash often risk everything to get the job done. The story is so fast-paced and I couldn’t stop reading! I found myself turning the pages faster and faster as the drama increased, and I couldn’t wait to see where Ash would be sent off to next.
The Infinity Files is so much fun, and it makes me wish interplanetary travel was so easy (so long as my life wouldn’t be at risk in the process). I loved how each destination has its own unique quirks, from a town of lizard people in a dome under the ocean, to a royal palace under the threat of war.
If you want a book that takes you on a thrilling adventure without leaving your seat, The Infinity Files is the book for you!
