Often, trilogies can go downhill with each book — but other times, a trilogy can stay strong until the very last page.
The Firebird Chronicles by Daniel Ingram-Brown is one of those series. The well-crafted stories feel unique, and the characters feel so real! A lot of characters in other MG stories can often feel unbelievable, either with the skills they have, the things they do or even the way they speak, but Fletcher, Scoop and all of the other characters feel like they could be real children going on a real adventure (but with a touch of added magic and fantastical creatures).
I read the first book in the series, Rise of the Shadow Stealers, in 2016 and since then it’s been a heck of a ride. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to get into the first book but the story developed in a way that made it engaging and dramatic, and I couldn’t put it down. Then the second one, The Nemesis Charm, came along and continued the story in ways I didn’t expect, taking me on a journey through fantastical lands and exciting stories.
In the third book, the story takes another turn and feels even more unique than the previous two books. It combines the world we’ve come to know from the first two books and our world, as Fletcher and Scoop cross over the Uncrossable Boundary and risk everything. The vivid imagery adds to the excitement, and the story comes together with a profound and beautiful conclusion to a great trilogy.
The Uncrossable Boundary wraps up the story in a way that feels satisfying, like everything is wrapped up well with no important questions left unanswered.
Why read this book?
If you love fantastical worlds, and even better—a world full of literary references (the main location is called Fullstop Island, and Fletcher and Scoop attend an academy that trains story characters), this series is for you. The descriptions help you picture the world and the characters so well, it feels like you’ve actually been to these magical places and met all of the characters!
This is also a great series for you if you love children’s magical adventure series. (It definitely gave me some strong Harry Potter vibes.)
TL;DR
Take the first book’s magic, the second book’s adventure, and multiply them by 100… you’ve got a book that’s bigger, bolder, and even harder to put down than the last! If you’re new to the series, it’s a fun read for absolutely anyone, from children to adults.
